Title: Recommend a Game
Post by: juner on November 26, 2014, 05:48:38 PM
Since my IRC chat with Saddam wasn't helpful, I am going to ask here. Come Christmas time, I am going to have a few days off without traveling plans. This will be the first down time I have had in a very long time and I want to power through a video game. I haven't been in the game in years. I stopped gaming around 2008, and came back for FF 13 (sadly), and the most recent thing I have played through was AC3. I have about 4 days to get the job done. I am primarily a consolefag as Saddam pointed out, but if it was worth it I would go PC since my PC is more than capable of playing anything currently available. Saddam suggested Morrowind repeatedly, which isn't happening.

So I am turning to the gamers of FES for a recommendation on either PS3 or PC. Don't let me down.

Have you played The Last of Us? Definitely a great PS3 game, came out quite a long time ago too, should be pretty cheap on the PS3.

RPG, adventure, FPS (if it isn't too generic). Only PS3 at the moment, plus my PC.

I actually have it. I got a PS3 basically for free last summer with Heavy Rain and The Last of Us. I played HR for a few hours but then had to get back to life. Haven't even opened The Last of Us.

Limited time.

I don't know. Is that your recommendation?

1. Morrowind repeatedly
2. Battletoads
3. Elite: Dangerous
Thank you for the input. Of those, I will take a look at Elite I think.

I got the system on a whim, for free. Had a few hours to kill and haven't been able to play since. Between work, classes, and family obligations I haven't had time. I read good things about the game, but this will be basically my one chance for a long time. Have to make it count, and I value your opinions.

Terrible, just terrible.

RPG, adventure, FPS (if it isn't too generic). Only PS3 at the moment, plus my PC.

Have you played Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning? I've heard good things about it, but I've never played it myself. The sequels to Final Fantasy XIII are supposedly a lot better than the original, but I haven't played those either after the disaster that was FF13. There are several Dynasty Warriors games on Ps3 that are good for mindless fun, but if you're looking for anything deeper than that then avoid them. Ni No Kuni is a decent JRPG, but kind of childish and has very little challenge.

For shooters, Unreal Tournament for Ps3 is the best thing since Unreal 99... but I would just recommend playing Unreal 99 on PC instead.

Generic answer would be: Uncharted, CoD Modarn Ware, GTAV, Destiny, Far Cry 4

Ps3 really doesn't have many good games. Get a Wii U or a 3DS.

I have the HD collection with that game as well. It's great. Ico... not so much. That was the first time I've played it, and it has since become one of my favorites. I recommend it if you haven't played it in a while. It's relatively short too.

MGS 3 is the best one, imo. But 4 isn't too bad.

Not sure I've heard of this one. Can you explain the premise?
The game centers on the quest of Mario and Luigi to save Dinosaur Land from Bowser, the series' antagonist. The two brothers must travel across seven worlds to restore order to Dinosaur Land. It built on the gameplay of previous Mario games by introducing new power-ups that augment character abilities, and established conventions that were carried over to future games in the series. Super Mario World marks the first appearance of Yoshi, Mario's dinosaur sidekick and riding mount.

Nintendo consoles/games lend themselves very well to casual on the go play. Super Smash Bros just came out for the WiiU, and so did a remake of the old Ruby and Sapphire Pokémon games. They also put out a new 3DS recently.

Junker is too old for video games.

It does happen, though. Sometimes the desire to play games (and the actual enjoyment of the game) fades, usually because as people get older they have more income, and more income means they can do things that don't involve sitting at the computer. Video games are mainly popular for kids because kids don't have much else more interesting to do.

I'm also guessing the genre of game you enjoy changed a lot, too. I know it did for me. In high school call of duty was the game of choice for me and friends all the time, but now I don't even bother. I play maybe two hours of Battlefield 4 a month.

Arma is like Eve Online; obnoxiously complex just for the sake of complexity without any real attempt at easing user interaction. I'm glad I bought into the alpha for like $30, because $60 is too much for that game.

It's not like that at all. Arma can be as arcadey or hardcore as you want. Wasteland servers are there for those who want a clunkier and larger scale Battlefield game. ACE/ACRE is there for those who want to pretend they're in the military. DayZ is there for people still nostalgic over a 2 year walking simulator. There's a whole slew of mods that do all sorts of things.

Regardless, I have like 2 hours on Arma because as I was explaining earlier, I have trouble having fun playing FPS games now. E:D will have to tide me over until SC is released, it is also coincidentally why I am always pissed that E:D isn't good enough yet to properly fill that role.

I like Kingdom Hearts. I was just wondering what you liked about it, since you don't really seem like the kind of person who would play that series. Book covers and whatnot. Shouldn't judge.

I wouldn't say it's one of my favorite series by any means, though. It's a bit too sappy at times, and the first game is still very lackluster. Kingdom Hearts 2 is infinitely  better (except Roxas).

It makes the majority of Final Fantasy games look like garbage, especially recent ones. When they release these remixes, it adds new content that I've never played before (and am very much interested in playing) as well as entire new games that I couldn't play because they were on the wrong platform.

Yeah, the game has Disney characters, but so what? Most of these Disney characters have stories and attitudes that can be taken more seriously than many FF characters anyway. Just play Final Fantasy 7 and try to tolerate Yuffie or Cait Sith for more than 5 seconds.

I think the Final Fantasy series is better than Kingdom Hearts overall, but KH does have many points in its favor. The combat system is more accessible to jrpg newcomers, which I think is the main reason it's so popular (and maybe the Disney characters). The story, however, is completely throwaway in my opinion. I did enjoy some of the Disney characters and their zones, but things like the Little Mermaid zone are cringe worthy.

I can see how you'd think KH is better than FF7, but it would be ridiculous to make that claim about Final Fantasy 9 or 10. 10 being the best game in the series, in my opinion. The story is actually really well written and tackles some mature themes (killing God, for one). The battle system is classic turn-based, just simplified to perfection by making it way more accessible than 7 or 8. Sure, some of the characters like Tidus, Wakka, and Yuna are annoying, but that can be said about Sora and his little girlfriend as well.

Also, pick any game that came out before or after Final Fantasy 13 and I'll tell you 6 reasons why that game is better. You can't really compare KH to FF13 for this reason.

The first one was actually my favorite. Everything past that got way too convoluted (like a typical JRPG).

The story is only perceived as convoluted because it is spread out among different games at different timelines on different consoles (something I consider to be ruinous of the series). If you play the games or watch the cinematics in their proper order, the story is actually straight forward. Kid me liked the first one's story because it was generically Disney [save the princess and the world(s)!] Adult me likes the expanded story line a lot better.

Basically the only reason that Kingdom Hearts isn't immensely more popular is that it is made by crazy ass Japanese people.

Well, yeah.

You just throw this out there and don't say anything else. What a Saddam-move.

I did enjoy some of the Disney characters and their zones, but things like the Little Mermaid zone are cringe worthy.

That's probably why they made the Little Mermaid zones optional in both KH1 and KH2. Only a completionist is forced to play them, you don't even get anything good out of doing them other than the ability to say you did.

I hate turn based games with a passion, so this is sort of lost on me.

See above.

I will totally agree with this.

Is there some nifty video out there that has all the cinematics in order? Cause you're right, I haven't played all the games since I don't own every single console.

Unless Youtube now allows 100+ hour videos, I doubt it. I know all the available English cinematics are on the youtubes, you just have to search them out.

There's the timeline showing all the games in chronological story order.

The Kingdom Hearts series has about as much story depth as Disney World.

The Kingdom Hearts series has about as much story depth as Disney World.

Deep as a kiddie pool, wide as an ocean.

Alternatively, you could just check out this google doc (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8cPyvE2GTjOMzE4MTVlZTctMjE5Yi00YzAzLWJjZTAtZTllODY2OTc2MTMx/edit?hl=en_US&pli=1) that attempts to make sense of the canon.

No, Rushy. Just no. Please peruse the doc I posted, then let me know if you still think KH's story is "actually straight forward". It is a pretty convoluted clusterfuck. It's way too complicated for a game about Disney characters fighting with Final Fantasy characters fighting against people who are actually other people inside other people pretending to be other people. Wait, nevermind.

Yeah, I'm going to have to go back over it but the people who are other people who are the heartless forms of other people didn't make any sense to me.

JRPGs are weird, not Japanese games in general. Japanese devs in general understand the philosophy behind level structure, enemy placement, game flow, pacing, what motivates the player and how to teach the player new concepts through game design better than Western devs do. See: Classic Castlevania, Megaman, or as a more recent example, the Souls games.

That being said, companies like Square who pay immense attention to their Mary Sue cardboard cutout characters and consider "character design" (and that's in terms of their visual design, not writing) to be the most important aspect in games, are terrible and misrepresent the virtuosity that does exist in Japanese game design. A lot of people say the Souls games "feel Western" or label them as WRPGs, but that's just because they don't pander to the otaku audience like Square does. The design philosophy in those games is very Japanese, and people seem to have forgotten what that means.

To put it another way, Square is a terrible company and JRPGs are terrible games.  Stop playing them, or if you must play them, stop trying to analyze their stories.  The devs obviously don't care about them, so you shouldn't either.

You're the kind of person that thought Inception was mind-blowingly complex.

I flip flop on Kingdom Hearts. I liked the first two games but I never liked the Nintendo handheld games.

I'm excited about 3 though. The game can get me in the feels even if I'm not 100% sure what's going on.

Watch the 358/2 days cinematics. The whole game will punch your feels repeatedly.

No I didn't. I was responding to rooster.

It's easy to follow when it's laid out for you in plain English and pictures, like a child's storybook. Most things are.
