Title: World Cup 2014
Post by: juner on June 21, 2014, 10:07:43 PM
I don't watch much soccer (football) even though it is the world's sport, but I find the World Cup enthralling.  The competition is so intense.  So much importance for each game.  Also, USA can advance out of group play with a win tomorrow so suck it England and Spain (both eliminated already).  I don't care how corrupt the system is, it is good television.

EDIT:  This is big enough to live outside of the sports thread.

While I agree, it's also pretty nice to follow sports and have an interest in games without being emotionally dependent. The athletes are incredible. Your country played extremely well. You should find a video of Cahill's goal (an Australian player) against the Netherlands. It will go down as the best goal of the tournament. I am sure of that.

What a crushing goal by Portugal in the last 30 seconds to come away with a tie.  USA is still in a good spot, but they should've closed it out today.

Is anyone else seeing "since when did America care about soccer" or "if the USA wins then the sport is officially called soccer" facebook posts? It's more annoying than just regular sports posts. STFU and let people enjoy a sport that's not American football.

Yeah that's probably a good suggestion. Reddit seems to explode with drama no matter what happens with the USA team, so it's at least entertaining.

Yes, USA is very polarizing in that regard.  Super drama in the group as well with so many possible outcomes.

USA is in a pretty good spot. We are 3 points up on Ghana and Portugal and our goal differential is 2 above Ghana and 5 above Portugal. I find it interesting that FIFA and most leagues consider goal differential as a tie breaker in front of head-to-head competition. It makes for very interesting finishes.

"Team USA's soccer teams coach is a trader cause he is German and has to try and beat his home country by playing as the team thats Country has the alot of other country's in the world by there nuts."

-somebody on Facebook

Part II: I replied "Very well said. What is he trading though?" to which he said "That's a stupid ass question, I just answered that in my status, you ask to many questions that's answers are right in front of you". I now understand the World Cup 2014.

I think losing 1-0 to Germany is a very respectable score. They are my tip for winning it. I shudder to think how many they would have put past England. Apparently our national team has managed to get some new sponsors.

Altidore will be back and I think they will have a much better outing.  They didn't attack at all except to maybe sneak a goal at the end, whereas Germany was constantly pushing it.  I am hoping how lazy they looked was part of a bigger plan.

Agreed.  Germany was playing for the win.  No collusion for a tie as was speculated.  Germany kept pushing after the first goal, though, until late in the game.  With how lax the USA looked, I think it could be a good sign if they show up in the next game.  Or, it is all wrong, they got lucky and are going to get bounced.

They may have been playing reserve to try to throw of their next opponent.  There was only one way they would get bounced, a Ghana win,  and that wasn't looking likely at half.  I would be ecstatic to see them get to the 8 round but I'm not counting on it.

Belgium just lost DeFour for the next game for his red card.  Not the end of the world, but every little bit counts.  USA will advance.  Book it.

Lukaku, Hazard, Courtois, Fellani, Kompany. The USA hasn't got any players like that. Belgium are going to have to get the shits from their hotel food before the USA get through.

I met a very drunk American in a bar tonight. He was an obnoxious twat. I nearly knocked him out in the toilets.

He was on about the Belgium game, and I said there was no shame in losing to the Belgians. They are a very good team. And that the USA would get better at soccer as more people in the US became interested in it. And he flipped out. "Soccer? Its football. Don't patronise me. I know what football is. I want to punch people who say soccer to me. Do you want to be punched?"

He is lucky that even when I am drunk I'm very good natured. I looked at him to see if he was going to punch me. The bar was virtually empty and I was thinking how I might smash his face into the toilet bowl repeatedly if he tried anything. No one was going to come to his rescue.

I just said "I think we'll leave it there" and made for the door. He looked relieved. But I'd had enough beer to make me cross the line. He was about 5' 6" and 50 years old. Out of shape and incredibly drunk. If it wasn't such a mismatch I'd have taught him some British manners. You don't fucking talk to me when I'm having a piss! >o<

If the US ever wins the World Cup, we get to officially rename the game to soccer and FIFA is forevermore known as FISA.

Football involves men full on tackling each other. Soccer is the game where someone touches your ankle and cry on the grass. It's an important distinction.

The USA won the 3rd World Cup I thought. American football should rename itself anyway. It's a sport that involves probably ten kicks of the ball per game. Footy puts the foot in football.
