You know, we can see satellites orbiting from the ground... They clearly aren't faked. You don't even have to be on the ISS to see them. We can also see the ISS from the ground.

I can also see airplanes from the ground, are you about to tell me airplanes prove the world is round because they're in orbit?

I thought you had to be further up to be "in orbit"

I didn't realize there was a report button, I apologize. I'll make sure to do that. Again, sorry.
Hey, it's no problem. Just trying to help. I know that there's a lot of FE vs RE hostility around here, and I'm sure that that sometimes leads to unconscious bias. My hope is that these are isolated incidents rather than the trend that some in this thread assert, but I'm also one of the worst qualified people to be able to call it impartially. If we have concrete examples to work with (FE'er misbehaves, gets reported, and it doesn't get actioned upon), then at least we can start seeing the bigger picture, if there is one.

Thanks. You're a really cool...um...person.

although there are a lot of people who make our arguments invalid as they just fall back to spamming "THE EARTH IS FLAT" over and over again. Banning these people would make it a lot easier to have a normal conversation.
Again, do you have any specific examples of this "a lot of people"? Have you tried reporting individual "offending" posts? Let's put the vague sentences to one side and try to identify the problem you're alluding to. That's the only way we can try to fix it.

I didn't realize there was a report button, I apologize. I'll make sure to do that. Again, sorry.

I did not mean to annoy anyone.  I just wanted some FE'ers to post.  It is boring to see a on side discussion.

I see your point.

I took boy scouts many moons ago, and from what I can tell, the only difference is the girl scouts sell those cookies.

Also it's my 100th post!

That, and also the Boy Scouts have more funding for their trips and camping.

Nice!

You'll appreciate that banning flat earthers from a flat earth website is rather counter-intuitive.

It would be like a haunted house with no ghosts.   ::)

There are also round Earthers who scream like children. I didn't mean just ban the FE members, but also the RE people who scream and whine that they are right.

but he didn't just bluntly say "people say x, therefore truth value"
Outside of the world of mathematics it’s pretty much impossible to prove anything absolutely
There is a reason why in UK courts something must be proven beyond reasonable doubt.
You have 10 witnesses that say that Pete shot Tom in cold blood over a dispute over the FE Wiki. They all claim they saw him.
What if they are all mistaken? It’s possible. Or it was someone who really looks like Pete.
But Pete’s fingerprints are on the gun.
Well, how do you know he didn’t handle the gun earlier in the day then left the gun lying around and someone else shot Tom?
…and so on.
The objections can get increasingly ridiculous but you could always say there’s some doubt. But is the doubt reasonable?
That’s for the jury to decide.

If I was building a case for a round earth the fact that every serious scientist believes in a round earth would absolutely be part of the case.
In itself it doesn’t prove it, but it does add weight to the likelihood of it being true.
This why they have "expert witnesses" in court cases, their expertise does add weight to a claim.
It doesn't automatically make it true but their opinion isn't irrelevant either.

Is it possible that every scientist is mistaken?
That all rocket launches by multiple countries are faked and secretly land somewhere?
That every photo and video from space is faked.
That every astronaut is lying.
That all the space tourists are too, or have been fooled somehow.
That the ISS isn't real and observations of it from earth are actually of something else?
Is it possible that Sky is lying about their signals coming from a geostationary satellite or being fooled by the European space agency?
Is it possible that GPS and satellite phones work in a way differently to the way they’re said to?

By the strictest definition of the word I’d have to concede that yes, all this is possible.
But is there anything which provides some reasonable doubt and makes any of this plausible?
I’d say no.

And the thing is, you can test things for yourself. You should get horizon dip on a globe earth, several ways have been shown recently which demonstrates that, I see no effort from any FE to do their own tests. As someone else noted, you can observe the ISS for yourself. You don't have to take other people's word for it.
You say you have done some experiments on the sinking ship thing. It's a shame your results aren't more easily available, I'd like to look at them.
The best I've seen about that on here is from Tom where a speck was "restored" by zoom. But the speck was just that, you could see no detail. And when they zoomed in it was clear the ship was not as far away as the horizon. You can see plenty of examples online of ships beyond the horizon which can't be restored by zoom because they are clearly behind a "hill of water". I don't have the equipment to do my own tests and, honestly, I don't feel the need to.

I'd like to understand why Tom thinks that earth is different from the other planets. Yes, there's life here. But otherwise we have many of the same characteristics as the other planets, there's no good reason to think we're special (leaving religion aside) or different from the other planets.

That...that is probably the best argument I've ever read...

Hello douglips,
Apparently my argument wasn't completely foolproof, but some of my more watchful friends, like the faithful Tumeni, can easily disprove your disagreement against my argument. Also, Wikipedia is an EXTREMELY unreliable source, so (much like you said about my argument) I can use your own quote against you: "Easy mistakes like this (for you, citing Wikipedia) lead to flat earthers (or Real Earthers, as I will now call it) pointing out your shortcomings and then ignoring anything you might have to say that's correct,"
So now that you have cited a COMPLETELY unreliable source, why should I trust the things you said earlier? How do I know that you didn't go to Wikipedia, type down the information you want to use, and then cite that.
This little discussion was a perfect example of the problem with this whole debate. It goes like this:
     1. Someone asks a legitimate question to flat earthers.
     2. A flat earther tries to answer this question, but has no evidence and a very weak answer
     3. Someone disproves the flat earther completely and makes their own accurate argument
     4. The flat eather disses the second person and then tries to disprove their argument, without providing any evidence
     5. And the cycle goes on with evidence spewing out of the Real Earth side, and a drop or two coming out of the Flat Earth side
Why can't we have a judge and a jury to finally say once and for all who's right and who is horribly wrong? Can someone please organize this debate?

If I had the power, I would do so. This forum is full of screaming children though, so it's a little hard to find anyone who actually makes sense. Really, it would have to be one of the admins for it to be a fair debate. But then the judge would have to be unbiased, and the jury, and everyone else other than the two people debating, because becoming biased leads to an unfair trail (Trust me, I know, my Grandpa went to jail for something he didn't do). The debate, inevitably would be impossible. It's hard to divide something so black and white without the proper knowledge.

Do you have specific examples you're trying to discuss?

Round Earthers are greatly overrepresented among people who only come here to start trouble, or to make content-free posts along the lines of "okay but the Earth is round and that's a fact". It's no surprise that they do this, and it should be no surprise that it's being dealt with.

You will note that very few people who try to simply discuss things are ever banned (our ban log is public). After a couple warnings most of them adapt to the culture of this place.

Like me! Haha, although there are a lot of people who make our arguments invalid as they just fall back to spamming "THE EARTH IS FLAT" over and over again. Banning these people would make it a lot easier to have a normal conversation.

Or Scouts BSA for short.

I just wanted to what you all thought of this. They have been accepting girls for a few months already. Their enrollment must be tanking hard.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-scouts/u-s-boy-scouts-to-change-name-in-appeal-to-girls-idUSKBN1I32EQ

I have to admit, it's slightly annoying, but it really doesn't bother a lot of scouts.

Since no FE'ers have replied, does this mean they concede?

This actually annoys me. Please stop things like these.

Flat Earth Theory / Re: Moon Landing?
« on: May 08, 2018, 06:06:50 PM »
The fact we haven't been back in 50 years should prove the hoax.
You can't think of a single other reason why we didn't go back?

Like, say, that each one was six billion dollars? Or that the space race ended and there was no longer massive public interest? Or even, get this, that NASA is gearing up for Mars right now?

And also, it hasn't been 50 years since the last Moon landing, and I'm fairly confident that SpaceX will get theirs in before December 2022.

And also...It's literally just a ball of rock in space, that we've been too multiple times. It's kinda like going to an empty room that no ones ever been in before. It's like "Woah, first person here" for the first few times, then it's like "Woah...been here...so not really woah" ^-^ haha

153
I'm pretty new here, and I was just wondering what reasons people, companies, and governments have to continue perpetuating the round earth.

It's because of the knowledge we have now, we can make sure the Earth is round, so they are just stating what has been proven, and if the Earth is one day proven flat, then that is what they will say.

154
Why Though?

I think the problem is people wrongly classify the earth as a planet. So, many assume that if the earth is a planet, it must be the shape of other celestial bodies.
I'm confused, Earth is not a planet? Alright, give us proof. You say so yourself that you do not accept facts without proof, so please support your claims or nobody will take you seriously. Also, I would like to have a debate about evolution, or the holocaust in a different setting, if possible.

Flat Earth Theory / Flat Earth Questions.

(If you dissolve into a screaming mess of name calling and stupidity, please, don't respond here, I want an actual debate.)

1. I've heard a lot of things, saying all space companies were fake, and just taking tax money. What proof do you have? I've never once heard or seen of an article saying this.

2. IF the Earth was flat, why do we have a history of proof for the round Earth, and not against it?

Flat Earth Community / Re: When did you start?

As a child, my parents took me to the beach a lot, and there, I could see big boats have their mast appear first.
As always, I feel obliged to remind that the Sinking Ship Effect is one of the most elegant proofs of the Flat Earth. It just happens to be misconstrued by RE believers.

when did you start believing the Earth was Flat, who/what gave you the evidence?  [...] I would love to hear your stories.
It was the Flat Earth Society that did it for me, personally. I first stopped by sometime around 2010 or 2011, and approached the subject with my tongue firmly in cheek. My story is not too different from that of many other Flat Earthers - I came here to defend Round Earth, but over time the inconsistencies just kept piling on. Mind you, this was long before the RE troll brigade was quite so numerous or well-resourced as it is now, so it was much easier to have an honest discussion on the matter.

Ahhh, it must have been. Truthfully, people are people. I've just decided to let those who want to believe what they want believe that. It's like when I became an Atheist, and my parents got angry because they are religious freaks. Just because someone thinks differently than what you call the norm, doesn't mean they are wrong. ^-^

As a child I was told that stars were suns in distant galaxies, I knew instinctively that was garbage.
I was also told we evolved from apes and I thought to myself "no we didn't"
I eventually succumbed to the relentless round earth programing but rejected the ape stuff.
Becoming a FEer was like coming back full circle, it was easy for me and the localised sun was the clincher.

I have a few questions. First, are you saying you're a creationist, second why did you think it was garbage? We've had these theories and experiments to prove them for hundreds of years. You yourself can do some of them.

Flat Earth Theory / Re: Elon Musk

That Tesla in space is a fake, it's nothing more than CGI. You have to be seriously brainwashed to believe there's a Tesla in orbit.

Prove it, come on. We're not the ones brainwashed here. You are. You can't go spouting random claims without evidence.

Flat Earth Theory / Re: Elon Musk

Fake? No, he's almost certainly real. The tesla in space, however, is almost certainly a hoax.

For some people its not about money. If they are in the elite group that control the world its not just money they care about. Its power.

Can you prove the tesla was faked? Also, what evidence do you have for THAT?

I'm guessing that all of you think Elon Musk is fake, and he's just doing the SpaceX hoax for money? Is his company fake, but for what reason? Money? I think owning Tesla, the Boring Company, selling Pay-Pal, and owning SpaceX, he'd have enough money.
