It normally kills about 100 people a year world wide! this year a few more.
A death toll of 4500 and counting for this outbreak is hardly "a few more".

If it progresses as predicted, it will be 2 orders of magnitude greater before the end of the year.

Predicted by whom? You think 400,000 deaths is likely? Total nonsense.

FTFY.

Yes, when it kills 100 people we do not invest sums of money to stop it do we?  Only when it goes on a rampage, and is looking to get worse, not better.

If 10,000 new cases a week start rolling in, that is 7,000 deaths/week.  This is almost double the amount of US casualties in the entirety of the Iraq war.. every week.  If we can help stop it, why wouldn't we?  What would you use the money for?
Its no where near the amount of casualties of the war if you take into consideration both sides. 7000 deaths a week is still nothing and we are no where near.

We will be within a couple of months according to the WHO.

7,000 deaths a week is not insignificant.  Especially when it is not targeting the weak and infirm, like flu deaths usually are.

I guess, Thork, you can put a value on life and it is less than $500K for you.  How many deaths would be required to make the expenditure of $1B worthwhile to you?

400,000 would be 3 orders of magnitude.

No.  It would be 2 orders of magnitude more than 400.

Okay, Thork stated that there are usually 100 deaths a year. Currently there have been 4500, which is one order of magnitude increase over normal. If we start getting 10,000 new cases a week, then the total number of deaths will be in the 10s of thousands in short order, which would be 2 orders of magnitude over normal rates.

This study from 2012 shows that Ebola was transferred between an infected pig and macaque monkeys without contact. I can't find any follow-up reports, though.

I read the same article and found that whomever discovered this was not willing to draw any conclusion about the method of infection. It was surmised that it could have been infected water droplets. Either that or we are all doomed.

And as predicted many weeks ago, ebola is levelling off in numbers and there won't be any pandemic.

Thork, even BBC didn't make the statements that you, personally, are making.

Bad stats

However, the data remains extremely poor.

This is particularly pertinent in Liberia - where new cases are supposedly falling - as only 38% of the reported cases are actually laboratory confirmed, compared with 85% in Guinea.

Are you still walking around wearing a mask and donating all your money to Africa to fight this apocalypse?

You need to stop watching CNN. They lie to you. True story.

All Americans stuff themselves with alcohol, tobacco, and fast food regularly, so don't worry about Ebola.  Seems legit.

Well, this started as an ebola thread but seeing that ebola isn't in the title I'll just warp it into a general "omg omg we're all going to die" thread.

Yes, vaccine resistant polio has emerged (in 2010). They just now released the paper on the gene sequences of the virus. Evolution once again tries to sucker punch humanity.

The banner at the top of my FB feed is now an ad asking if I want to donate to Ebola organizations in West Africa. I am now convinced that Ebola is a synthetic disease created by the US government in order to take my hard earned money.

Just an update on the 'pandemic' compared to other diseases since its outbreak.

http://static.spectator.co.uk/Pd986/?fs=1

73 times as many people have died from the shits. Why isn't Bob Geldof singing about diarrhoea instead of Ebola? It would be more appropriate considering his musical talents.

Bob Geldof is busy murdering pop stars and making it look like suicide. He doesn't have time for all that shit.

Has the name "Captain Trips" surfaced yet, or any sightings/mention of 'the walking dude'?

Until then... meh.
