President Obama is Relinquishing Control of ICANN

Unless Congress acts otherwise, starting October 1st, the US contract with ICANN will expire and the corporation will be held accountable only to what is described as "multiple international shareholders in an organization akin to the UN." Although this has been planned well in advance, it still seems like a rather strange thing to do for your last year in office. I can't imagine the ramifications of giving away control of ICANN in this manner.

I'm not going to pretend that I'm an expert on this subject, far from it, but after looking it up, I've found the following articles:

http://fusion.net/story/343533/who-controls-the-internet/

http://www.latimes.com/opinion/editorials/la-ed-internet-governance-icann-20160916-snap-story.html

https://techcrunch.com/2016/09/09/the-us-is-not-handing-over-the-internet/

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2016/09/21/cruzs-claim-that-icanns-transition-will-empower-foes-to-censor-the-internet/

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2016/09/20/ted-cruz-is-wrong-about-a-key-internet-agencys-ability-to-censor-free-speech/

The only sources supporting the claim that this somehow involves surrendering control of the Internet to foreign countries are fringe right-wing websites of dubious credibility (and yes, this does include the WSJ, at least as far as their political reporting goes).  This looks to be a very straightforward issue of reputable sources saying one thing and cranks saying another.

George, all I said was exactly what is happening. ICANN is currently under contract to the federal government and on October 1st it will essentially be free to do whatever it wants, similar to any other corporation.

"We must give up some freedoms in the interest of long term security"

Thanks Obama.
