Flat Earth Debate / Re: Using airline flight data.

Well I know where you are going with this, as you will cavil away until the end of time rather than concede a point. However I have driven a good deal of this continent (from northern Scandinavia to southern Spain) over the years, using both maps and GPS, and it joins up, mileage is in the limits you expect from elevation changes and getting lost and I have always got where I wanted within the times I calculated.

I'm flying to Lisbon Sunday morning from Luton airport (England), distance 994.06 miles, estimated time of flight 2hrs 50mins, I'll time it.

But you have to admire his spirit.

“Now, now my good man, this is no time to be making enemies."
(Voltaire on his deathbed in response to a priest asking him that he renounce Satan.)

As Voltaire said “God is a comedian playing to an audience that is too afraid to laugh.”

I know you lot don’t get out much, but lame excuses like we can’t be totally sure the maps and GPS aren’t lying to us, so we can’t make a map, sorry, it just wouldn’t be zetetic enough. Really!

There may be some reddit whingers where discrepancies in speeds are the only excitement they will ever get, but I’m pretty sure there aren’t any saying, I drove to Edinburgh/(anywhere) using my Michelin map/Garmin but it wasn’t there, and the old guy sitting there reckons it’s 20miles north.

(Then again, my wife had an appointment at Birmingham Uni’ at 9.30 am, didn’t get back to just past Leicester (50 miles) until 8.00 at night, I just thought she was shagging someone else, I guess I’d better dig her up and apologise, the flat earth made me do it officer.)

So that's how you grab a few bits of history (there are facts in there) and make a conspiracy, not watertight, but it only has to appeal to your targets prejudices and away you go.

Back to the history bit.
I think as I am a guest on a site that, jokingly or otherwise professes that the world is flat, we should have a quick look at what people actually thought back then. As mentioned before, Leif Ericson found his way to America within a few years of the first millennium, it's a fairly safe bet that as a mariner he was used to the fact that the horizon bends away in all directions and countries he was visiting appeared from the highest point first as Gecko has kindly pointed out, but he clearly wasn't afraid of falling off the edge otherwise he would have been a more stay at home kind of Viking, but this is purely anecdotal as far as evidence goes.

As we who have been here a while know, the round Earth theory is a NASA concoction, however Alfred the Great of  Wessex (849-899), who was a great believer in education for its own sake, commissioned a great deal of translations of classical works and treatise thereof, and he talks of the world in an unambiguously spherical manner. Comparing the earth to “the yolk in the middle of an egg which can move about (within the confines of) the egg. Similarly the world remains still in its station. Outside the play of  the sky and the stars, and the bright shell itself revolve around it every day – long has it done so”
Now clearly he could have done with reading his Copernicus and Galileo, but as this was the late 800's we can forgive him that.

So, either  NASA was conceived  by the West Saxons or these ancients had a lot more about them than some of the people that gather here of a night.

You're not a narcissist just because you're a conspiracy or flat earth theorist

Nope, but there is a direct correlation between people with narcissistic personality and conspiracy theory, and the entirety of your post, screams it. Your scorn of the mainstream as mindless automatons, whilst affiliating yourself with the heroes of free thought, this whole “nobility in challenging authority” versus the drones that are too scared to, priceless! I bet you wear purple.

You challenge us to tread the paths less trod, because you “know” we couldn’t have, and still come to the conclusions we have.

Science, is subject to humanities frailties and faults as any other, but in my personal dealings with scientists, I have found some, to be the most innovative and daring of people. Some of the most ground-breaking of discoveries were made against the tide of perceived wisdom. Evolution, Plate tectonics, all struggled against the status Quo, as did Luis Alvarez with his theory of mass extinction due to meteor impact. Junior doctor, Barry Marshall was so sure the medical establishment was wrong about the cause of stomach ulcers that he swallowed the bacteria he believed were to blame, then cured himself of the Ulcers using antibiotics and still had to fight for years for it to be accepted.

The reason these are now part of the furniture of modern science is because they are right, whereas FE has had 100yrs to come up with proof and has demonstrably failed to do so.

He’s pretty dire though, apart from the pointless jibe at the end of his last post, the whole of his argument was someone else’s, and he expects to be taken seriously?

I’m sorry but Spheri’ is right.

To paint a picture of scientists, and those that believe in the roundness of the earth as mindless followers, shows, not only that you know little of the history, or the practice of science but you have the requisite narcissism to be a fully fledge conspiracy nut, you can see beyond the veil but the rest of us are “sheeple” (Galileo, Turring, Sakharov?) too scared to raise our hands, please!
This shadowy elite that leads us by the nose through history, would have to run back before the (supposed) birth of Christ, stretching through the rest of history across pretty much all nations. For what reason? To undermine the teachings of someone who hadn’t been born yet, that’s some forward thinking shadowy elite.

Or just maybe, science discovers stuff that leads us to challenge myths, and the myth-mongers don’t like that.

After this triangle nonsense I doubt if we will hear from Tom again.

Oh, you are so mistaken! He’s the crusty Trump of the FE world, revered, never questioned by his minions.
You would have thought that after messing up the beach photos in the Bishop experiment, he would have changed his name, but no, he came back with the famous video and the angles of the moon debacle, anyone else would have burnt their computer from embarrassment and gone to live under a rock after the slapping he got there but here he is, Teflon Tom.

Seeing as you seem unable to put a coherent arguement forward with out links, and seeing as I for one, am unwilling to follow them, I will leave it there. If you should ever wish to discuss things properly, pop back.

Now HERE Ladies and gentlemen is a "Religion" (ideology/mindset) that does NOT = Peace

.. The Truth About Islam

There should be a salutary lesson for the likes of yourself here, but I’m guessing you will not get it.

From the late 8th century through to the arrival of the Mongol hordes in the 1200’s  the Islamic world was one of innovation, in science, maths, engineering, medicine, philosophy etc, based on the Koranic message  “The scholar’s ink is more sacred than the blood of martyrs”, the setting up of The House Of Wisdom in Baghdad and the translation of Greek, Egyptian, Hebrew, Persian works into Arabic at a time when the Holy Roman empire was busily supressing what they saw as pagan schools of thought, meant that at these times the cradle of civilisation, was the middle east. It was the Islamic Golden Age.

To get from there, to the poison that is the IS version of Islam, you need a couple of things and a bit of time. If you want to dent the confidence of a civilisation, then having the Mongols rock up and show you that sophistication and learning means squat, when 120,000 smelly pony riders fielding 20,000 Chinese siege engineers, take your cities apart and leave just piles of heads. Then you need the doomsayers and conservative elements to preach we told you so, and this is our punishment for progression, let’s turn our backs on modernisation and go back to the stoning’s, as there’s nothing like blaming the ones you envy to placate a god that isn’t really there.

Like I said, I will leave you to join the dots as to how this mirrors Christianity’s current state, but just remember. I told you so!

So, you want to know the truth? Laudable, but your methodology of discounting science (bad guys with crazy hair and mind control?) in favour of “Guesses” and inserting “secret alien technology” when stumped, isn’t even on par with sifting through entrails or casting bone dice, I mean at least the bone dice guys were taught by other bone dice guys as to the patterns, you are randomly splashing around the internet shallows listening to nutters who bypassed the education system and smoked too much blow, good luck with that.
