Welcome to Flat Earth Theory!

The purpose of this board is to directly examine, discuss and critique the Flat Earth Theory. We encourage posts in support of both the Flat Earth and Round Earth model (or, indeed, any other model). Please note that this board is strictly moderated, and threads which do not focus on a sincere discussion of FET will be moved away from the board.

Before posting, please make sure to familiarise yourself with the forum rules and the Frequently Asked Questions section of our Wiki.

Please also utilise the search function to check if there is already a thread covering your subject.

The top level Flat Earth Discussion Forums are a Debate Club. As in any debate club, the goal is to exercise your ability in debate to poke holes in arguments and expose weaknesses, even if you do not believe in that position yourself. Keep in mind that this is a friendly debate. Post in the Flat Earth Debate Club and join the fun!

Welcome to the Flat Earth Community board!

The purpose of this board is to discuss subjects concerning the Flat Earth community (but not the Flat Earth Theory itself). This includes sharing interesting articles, interviews, YouTube videos, etc. regarding the Flat Earth Movement as a whole, but also discussion of recent events which affect the community.

Before posting, please make sure to familiarise yourself with the forum rules and the Frequently Asked Questions section of our Wiki.

Please also utilise the search function to check if there is already a thread covering your subject.

Welcome to Flat Earth Investigations!

The purpose of this board is to investigate authoritative claims on virtually any topic. The Flat Earth Society encourages healthy scepticism, and seeks to question our institutions and challenge conventional wisdom. While we expect that most threads here will (directly or indirectly) challenge the Round Earth doctrine, this is not a strict requirement for participation.

Please not that this is not the right board for asking entry-level FET questions. If your post starts with "I'm new and I just wanted to ask" or "The Earth can't be flat because of this concept", you're in the wrong place and should probably be looking at the Flat Earth Theory board (and the FAQ).

Flat Earth Theory / Re: Full Moon Impossible on Flat Earth?

That's not how it reads to me, but of course that's entirely subjective. Even then, just complaining that people are responding to your thread is unlikely to help.

Why would you start a thread and then complain about literally every answer you get? Tom clearly asked you to stop posting off-topic in another thread - that is by no means an indication that he'd rush to discuss the other subject with you. None of your complaints are valid, and the OP's approval for where a thread ends up going is irrelevant.

The screenshot posted earlier on the last page suggests that it was a title at one point, and then edited to be the last sentence of the article.
It doesn't. The screenshot even includes the title.

archive.is has a copy of the article from the day of its publication:
https://archive.is/Vqh58

and so does archive.org's Wayback Machine:
https://web.archive.org/web/20160526171424/http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/26/opinions/clinton-email-server-ig-report-opinion-cox/index.html

We can also have a look at how CNN Opinion spread the article on social media:
https://www.facebook.com/CNNOpinion/posts/1027545787334859
"The inspector general directly contradicts Clinton's repeated assertions that she complied both with federal law and State Department policies."

Using simply the article's title.

You know, it really doesn't sound to me like they're trying to defend her.

If CNN is saying wrong things for comedic purposes, it's still wrong.
I don't think there is a single person here who argues that the statement is correct

Either way, can you answer the second part of the question?
Define "turning". If you're using a compass to, say, keep your course due East, there will be no need for you to deviate from "due East" at any point in time.

Ok, so I’ve heard Flat Earther’s claim that in a round Earth, planes should have to keep pointing their noses down to avoid flying into space.
I think someone may have been trying to pull your leg. Flat Earthers tend to understand the Round Earth model better than that.

If you commit murder and get away with it because the prosecutors are unwilling or unable to prosecute you, have you committed a crime?
You're reading into this too literally. Yes, the statement is self-contradictory. That's intended for (presumably) comedic purposes. The nuance behind the contradiction is presented prior to the conclusion.

The CNN article seems to be saying "well she's guilty... but she's going to get away with it," which doesn't really justify the contradictory title, and is contradictory to how law works.
It's actually not the title. It's the last sentence of the article.

To my understanding, the comment is somewhat sarcastic. She violated the law, but still prosecutors would find it difficult, if not impossible, to charge her with a crime. It should be read as a criticism of the legal system, and not a defence of Clinton.

Flat Earth Community / Re: Research Project

Hi there. Since you've asked quite a few questions, I'll try to provide a short answer to all of them for the time being. If there are any answers that you'd like me to go into more detail on, please feel free to ask follow-up questions!

What was the event that made you believe in the Flat Earth? What made you reject the Round Earth model? How long have you believed in the Flat Earth?
I wouldn't say it was down to a single event. I don't think many people would suddenly flip their worldview on its head over a single occurrence - they'd be more likely to simply push it away or get defensive. For me, becoming a Flat Earther was a lengthy and reluctant process. I first encountered the Flat Earth Society sometime around 2010-2011 and engaged in multiple debates over the years. Eventually, my trust in the Round Earth model began to erode, but it's extremely difficult to put an actual timeline on things. I would say that by 2014 I was a committed Flat Earther, but it's all very fuzzy.

Since endorsing this belief have you encountered evidence that made you question the Flat Earth?
Certainly. The most recent example would have been SpaceX's publicity stunt. You know, the one with the red car. It's possible that this has been faked, or that it's inconclusive, but I wouldn't assume that outright. So, as it stands, I'm on the fence.

What kind of interactions do you have with individuals from outside the community? (Round-Earthers? Or other conspiracy theory groups?)
I'm not sure if I understand the question. Being a Flat Earther is not something that defines me as an individual. I don't think my interactions with those who don't share my beliefs are really affected.

Are you comfortable/feel safe sharing your views with individuals in real life?
Not always. I make a judgement call depending on individual. Flat Earthers have been subjected to physical attacks over their beliefs in the past, and I'm no exception to that. Most of the time, this is not a problem, however.

Are there differing opinions about the Earths shape or other aspects of the Earth within the community?
Absolutely.

How are differences discussed or resolved?
Within the Society, we encourage free speech and the exchange of ideas. Resolutions develop organically - either we eventually agree on a point, or we don't. This approach is not without its issues, but it has helped the Flat Earth Theory grow in ways which would previously not be possible.

What role, if any, does the Bible play in your understanding of the Earth? What role does the Bible play in the beliefs that the community as a whole hold?
As far as the Flat Earth Society is concerned, we're not a religious organisation (but not explicitly against religion, either). There are other Flat Earth groups with very different approaches, but I couldn't really comment on them. Personally, I am completely non-religious and uninterested in the contents of the Bible, Koran, Torah, etc.

Do you believe in any other conspiracy theories? Earth or Non-Earth related?
Not currently, but I'm not dismissing the possibility of entertaining some of them in the future.

Do you think the term conspiracy theorist is a negative, neutral, or positive term?
A term only means what the users of the term intend for it to mean. Currently, its social context is overwhelmingly negative.

Thanks for setting this straight. I should have known better than to take it at face value.

tbh i don't get the impression that you understand the difference between news and opinion pieces.
But isn't it a liberal talking point that giving a platform to wacky opinions is terrible and also bad? Why would CNN give a platform to someone who thinks you can violate the law without, well, violating the law?

Aw, do you have to be so smug? :(
C'mon. You know me.

I still don't buy it, I don't see why NK would be spending money and resources to continue making "rapid improvements" to a facility it plans to dismantle, but let's wait and see I guess.
It's a tough one. It's obviously possible that KJU is playing Trump like a fiddle. However, I find it more likely that North Koreans are in some weird limbo - their leader committed to doing something, but issued no orders to that effect. What do you do in that situation? Bonus points: if you get it wrong you're a traitor and very bad things happen to you.

We always warn people publicly. It's a transparency thing. Take your complaints about moderation to S&C where they belong - you already started a thread there.

Dang, I guess Trump didn't bring peace to the Korean peninsula after all. :(
To be sure, 38 North noted that continued work at the Yongbyon facility should not be seen as having any significant impact to North Korea’s pledge to denuclearize. Instead, the report says the country can be expected to proceed with “business as usual” until specific orders are issued from Pyongyang.

Come on, Roundy. There's no need to disprove your own claims within the same post. Leave some fun for the rest of us!

Suggestions & Concerns / Re: Pete is behaving irrationally...
« on: June 27, 2018, 04:48:02 PM »
For context, here is your warning:

Again, there is very little hope for any facts to get through to your level of understanding...
I know squirrels like nuts but they should not behave as if they are actually nuts out in public on an open forum, yet...
Speaking of things you shouldn't do on a public forum: please keep personal attacks out of the upper fora. We are here to discuss ideas, not individuals.

If you really need to unload, do so in Angry Ranting. Alternatively, take a deep breath and focus on the merit of what you want to say, not whether or not you think the other person is stupid or insane. Warned.

If you think I'm irrational - that's great! Take it to AR. In the meantime, you will be asked to comply with the rules. You should be more than capable of disagreeing with your opponents without calling them childish names

Fantastic logic. Your assumptions are "there's no need to consider reality if I can just divide numbers by one another".

Why not multiply them, instead? You'll be equally correct. Wait, no, let's add them! That will be fun!

Special Relativity is absolutely essential here. If you really want to identify which of your statements is wrong, it's the first one - because you didn't specify the frame of reference, and coincidentally happened to switcheroo between two of them throughout your reasoning.
