Title: Best Buy + FBI = Bribery Win!
Post by: Lord Dave on January 06, 2017, 10:07:03 AM
http://www.ocweekly.com/news/best-buy-geek-squad-informant-use-has-fbi-on-defense-in-child-porn-case-7794252

Summary: Bestbuy technician is an FBI informant who went through a guy's unallocated data and found a child porn pic.  FBI then arrests said person with underhanded trickery, lies, and other shit cause an image found in unallocated space can't be proven to have been put there knowingly.  There was no reason for him to go through said data.  Not as thoroughly as he likely had to.

While I am fully against child porn, it seems highly unlikely that he would take his computer to best buy if he was viewing such images.  It's also odd that he would only have one.  So odds are he either got it accidentelly or it was up on without him knowing and his pc used as a p2p server.

Or the FBI wanted the guy out of the picture for entirely different reasons and fabricated the evidence.

Then again, it's not entirely unlikely that the guy would go to Best Buy. Don't forget about the Silkroad guy who got busted because he accidentally published his identity on StackOverflow.

Yup, specifically here (https://stackoverflow.com/questions/15445285/how-can-i-connect-to-a-tor-hidden-service-using-curl-in-php). He was originally registered under his real name and e-mail address. The evidence trail was very weak, but they deemed it enough to warrant an investigation - and clearly rightly so.

I'm guessing the .onion file he had was the weak evidence.  Otherwise I can't see why they'd have any link between him and whoever they were investigating.

The .onion URL was originally that of The Hidden Wiki - a relatively well-known source of child pornography among other things [n.b. he edited his post after people started pointing it out]. There aren't particularly many reasons for anyone to want to curl that. It proves nothing by itself, but asking overly-specific questions about services like that will raise some eyebrows.

Good to know.  Surprised he didn't change the URL but hey, everyone forgets sometimes when the need to jack off to kids really gets them blue balls.
